Livestock Production

To be prepared for careers in the field of animal science, students need to attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire knowledge and skills related to animal systems and the workplace, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. Animal species to be addressed in this course may include, but are not limited to, beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry.
Topics covered in class (no specific order):
*Employability characteristics of a successful employee
*Demonstrate technical skills relating to the interrelated human, scientific, and technological dimensions of animal systems
* Perform technical skills related to livestock production
*Explain anatomy and physiology related to nutrition, reproduction, health, and management of domesticated animals
*Determine nutritional requirements of ruminant and non-ruminant animals, including poultry
*Explain animal genetics and reproduction
*Identify animal pests and diseases
*Know the factors impacting commodity prices and costs
*Plan for dynamic changes in business operation
*Develop an improved supervised agriculture experience program as it relates to agriculture, food, and natural resources
